These are usually one-offs and while interesting don't portend any trend. In the last two months we've received a disturbingly large number of these and most revolve around the issue of Vendor fraud, and more specifically a diversion of payments from the rightful payee to an unrelated third party. Warning: Be on the alert for questionable change of address/change of bank account email requests that do not actually originate with the vendor, despite what the email address seems to imply. Look closely at the address. Also, be aware that some of these requests may come in a letter in the mail. Do NOT be fooled if the return address is that of your supplier. Anyone can put any return address on a letter. Best Practice Advice: Verify any and all requests that ask you to change some vital piece of information. Yes, this means picking up the phone and calling the vendor. When you make the call do NOT use the phone number so helpfully provided in the email or letter. If the email or letter came from a crook, they will be the ones answering the phone to verify the change demand. Some folks go one step further requiring all such requests to include the previous account number. This helps but on its own is not enough. Observat= ion: From time to time at AP Now, controllers call or write with= a question about what's going on in their AP department. These are usually= one-offs and while interesting don't portend any trend. In the last two mo= nths we've received a disturbingly large number of these and most revolve a= round the issue of Vendor fraud, and more specifically a diversion of payme= nts from the rightful payee to an unrelated third party.

Warning<= /span>: Be on the alert for questionable change of address/change of ba= nk account email requests that do not actually originate with the vendor, d= espite what the email address seems to imply. Look closely at the address. = In our Business Email Compromise webcast we go through = some of these examples in tedious detail. Also, be aware that some of these= requests may come in a letter in the mail. Do NOT be fooled if the return = address is that of your supplier. Anyone can put any return address on a le= tter.

Best Pra= ctice Advice: Verify any and all requests that ask you to change= some vital piece of information. Yes, this means picking up the phone and = calling the vendor. When you make the call do NOT use the phone number so h= elpfully provided in the email or letter. If the email or letter came from = a crook, they will be the ones answering the phone to verify the change dem= and. Some folks go one step further requiring all such requests to include = the previous account number. This helps but on 
its own is not enough.
