The caller says the IRS has mistakenly deposited a refund into your bank account. They would like you to return the funds and they provide you instructions on how to return the money. What do you do? If you said you immediately check your account to see if the money is there, that is a good start. Once you've ascertained the funds are there, do you return them and if so how? The Right Way to Handle This Matter. Yes, you have to give the money back. But do NOT follow the instructions the caller provided. In all likelihood you were talking to a fraudster who probably has your bank account information and definitely has your name and social security number. To return the funds, go to irs.gov and search for "Topic Number: 161 -Returning an Erroneous Refund - Paper Check or Direct Deposit." Then follow those instructions. And if this were me, because I am so paranoid about these, things, I'd also visit my bank, close the account in question and open another one, and sign up for a credit monitoring service. This is just one more example of how crafty fraudsters continually find new ways to get their hands on money that doesn't rightfully belong to them. Situation:
You get a call from the IRS. The caller says the IRS has mistakenly de= posited a refund into your bank account. They would like you to return the = funds and they provide you instructions on how to return the money.
What do you do? If you said you immediately check your account to see i= f the money is there, that is a good start. Once you've ascertained the fun= ds are there, do you return them and if so how?

The Right Way to Handle This Matter. Yes, you have to give the money back. But do NOT follow the ins= tructions the caller provided. In all likelihood you were talking to a frau= dster who probably has your bank account information and definitely has you= r name and social security number. To return the funds, go to irs.gov and s= earch for "Topic Number: 161 -Returning an Erroneous Refund - Paper Check o= r Direct Deposit." Then follow those instructions.

And if this were me, because I am so paranoid about these, things,= I'd also visit my bank, close the account in question and open another one= , and sign up for a credit monitoring service. This is just one more exampl= e of how crafty fraudsters continually find new ways to get their hands on = money that doesn't rightfully belong to them.
