President Donald Trump has canceled his first offi= cial visit to Latin America as his administration weighs its response to a = new suspected chemical attack in Syria, the White House said Tuesday.

"The president will remain in the United States to oversee the American re= sponse to Syria and to monitor developments around the world," White House = Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. Trump was sched= uled to depart to Lima, Peru, to attend the Summit of the Americas this wee= k, followed by a stop in Bogota, Colombia. Vice President Mike Pence will t= ravel in his place. On Monday, Trump said he would be making a "major decis= ion" about Syria "in the next 24 to 48 hours."
