President Donald Trump said Thursday he was enacti= ng steel and aluminum tariffs, capping off a week's worth of controversy ov= er his plans to impose the new trade penalties.

The tariffs =E2=80=94= 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum =E2=80=94= will take effect on March 23, the administration said. Mexico and Canada w= ill receive immediate exemptions in the context of the ongoing NAFTA renego= tiation, though it was unclear how long those exceptions might last.
