This is not news many people want to hear. So, then you ask: Why am I writing this? We try and take the "good friend" approach. A good friend is someone who tells you what you need to hear, not necessarily what you want to hear. So, that's why we're beating this drum. Once again the accounts payable profession and process is about to be turned on its head. Rapid advances in technology in other areas will continue to spill over into accounts payable. Think about this way. If Siri or Alexa (or whatever your personal assistance service you use) can easily get you a weather forecast anywhere in the world or tell you who won last night's game, why shouldn't this technology be easily adapted to tell your suppliers whether or not you received their invoice, when it is schedule for payment and if there any discrepancies. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. The new technologies (AI and RPA) are being combined and accounts payable processes are often at the top of the list of new applications. I like to think of it as invoice automation on steroids ... or perhaps, more accurately, as the next step in the upgrading and enhancement of the AP function. An Action Plan Step 1 - Read anything you can about AI, RPA and AP. Step 2 - Look at some short videos on Youtube to see how RPA is being used in AP. Step 3 - Start thinking about and identifying new skills that are likely to be in demand in this new world economy. Progress marches on and marches on quickly. The innovations are not something that will happen ten or twenty years from now. It's more like ten or twenty (or maybe 30 months) from now. There's no comf= ortable way to say this. This is not news many people want to hear. So, the= n you ask: Why am I writing this? We try and take the "good friend" approac= h. A good friend is someone who tells you what you need to hear, not necess= arily what you want to hear. So, that's why we're beating this drum.=
 
Once again the = accounts payable profession and process is about to be turned on its head. = Rapid advances in technology in other areas will continue to spill over in= to accounts payable. Think about this way. If Siri or Alexa (or whatever yo= ur personal assistance service you use) can easily get you a weather foreca= st anywhere in the world or tell you who won last night's game, why shouldn= 't this technology be easily adapted to tell your suppliers whether or not = you received their invoice, when it is schedule for payment and if there an= y discrepancies. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
 
The new technol= ogies (AI and RPA) are being combined and accounts payable processes are of= ten at the top of the list of new applications. I like to think of it as in= voice automation on steroids ... or perhaps, more accurately, as the next s= tep in the upgrading and enhancement of the AP function.
 
An Action Plan
 
Step 1 - Read a= nything you can about AI, RPA and AP.
Step 2 - Look a= t some short videos on Youtube to see how RPA is being used in AP. <= /div>
Step 3 - Start = thinking about and identifying new skills that are likely to be in demand i= n this new world economy.
 
Progress marche= s on and marches on quickly. The innovations are not something that will ha= ppen ten or twenty years from now. It's more like ten or twenty (or maybe 3= 0 months) from now.
