However, the following story demonstrates how if left unchecked, expense reporting fraud can result in huge losses. The Story: The man in question held positions at the company he defrauded of Vice President, Chief Information Officer and President from 2001 through 2014. He submitted forged documentation from various branches of the US military and other government agencies. These documents purported to acknowledge orders of procurement data on the company's behalf, and purported to be signed by real federal employees. He then requested reimbursement from the company for charges he had purportedly incurred from the government agencies. In total, the company paid him approximately $1.6 million in reimbursements based on this scheme. Additionally, he didn't pay taxes on this duplicitously obtained income nor did he file tax returns for several years. The Outcome: He was recently sentenced to nine years in prison. While it has not been disclosed how the fraud came to light, I'd love to know as it might shine light on how to prevent this type of fraud in your organization. The Morale: All expense reports should be checked. If anything looks odd, the submitter should be questioned - regardless of the level or title of the employee! Dear Kathleen

We fully concede = most employees who cheat on their expense reports will not end up going to = jail. However, the following story demonstrates how if left unchecked, expe= nse reporting fraud can result in huge losses.

The Story: The man in questio= n held positions at the company he defrauded of Vice President, Chief Infor= mation Officer and President from 2001 through 2014. He submitted forged do= cumentation from various branches of the US military and other government a= gencies. These documents purported to acknowledge orders of procurement dat= a on the company's behalf, and purported to be signed by real federal emplo= yees.

He then requested reimbursement from the company for char= ges he had purportedly incurred from the government agencies. In total, the= company paid him approximately $1.6 million in reimbursements based on thi= s scheme. Additionally, he didn't pay taxes on this duplicitously obtained = income nor did he file tax returns for several years.

The Outcome: He was rec= ently sentenced to nine years in prison. While it has not been disclosed ho= w the fraud came to light, I'd love to know as it might shine light on how = to prevent this type of fraud in your organization.

The Morale: All expense= reports should be checked. If anything looks odd, the submitter should be = questioned - regardless of the level or title of the employee!
