"Keeping your ski= lls up to date is vital to career advancement, and acquiring a general or i= ndustry-specific certification is one way to do so," said Paul McDonald, senior executive director at Robert Hal= f. Recent Robert Half research shows that 72 percent of CFOs interviewed sa= y their company will cover all or some of the cost of obtaining a professio= nal certification, and 76 percent said their organizations help in maintain= ing such certifications once they're earned.

The AP Now'= s AP Best Practice certificate program provides the cri= tical information professionals need to stay current and advance in account= s payable.

Robert Half= offers five tips for getting company support to acquire professional certi= fications:
  1. Make a business case. Devise a plan before you approach = your boss. Describe how the certification will allow you to make greater co= ntributions to the company.
  2. Cite immediate benef= its. Show examples of how the certification will help improve productivity,= bring additional revenue or allow you to take on additional responsibiliti= es.
  3. Prepare for the future. Explain to your mana= ger how your training will develop you for leadership positions.
  4. Share the wealth. Let your boss know that an investment in= your education can strengthen the entire organization. Offer to share the = information learned or mentor colleagues to extend the value of your added = expertise.
  5. Divide the cost. If your manager denie= s your request, don't give up. Are you willing to cover part of the fees fo= r your professional certification? If not, revisit the conversation in a fe= w months if you sense your boss may be more open to it in the future.
There is one bene= fit for professionals in accounts payable. More than occasionally, manageme= nt does not realize that professionals working in or managing accounts paya= ble are interested in career advancement. By asking for support in enrollin= g in the certificate program you alert management to that fact.
