The Facts * A cyber strategy expert was recently quoted citing research from Proofpoint that found a 45 percent spike in BEC attacks in the last quarter of 2016 compared to Q3. * A new survey just released by the AFP revealed that 74 percent of survey respondents said their organizations were victims of business email compromise in 2016-a 10 percentage point increase from 2015. * Who is responsible for this surge? A number of crooks; but most notably, the Department of Justice plans to charge a Lithuanian man with $100 million of this scam and Interpol has arrested a 40-year old man and charged him with $60 million of this type of fraud. Alas, these two are just the tip of the iceberg as most experts believe losses exceed $3 billion. Before we get to the breaking news, there is a date cha= nge for the Philadelphia Payment Fraud Prevention and Detection Symposium a= nd workshops. It will be held July 13-14 instead of in May. This was due to= an operational issue. The Denver event remains on June 8-9. You can get ad= ditional information here.

The= Facts
  • A cyber strategy expert was recen= tly quoted citing research from Proofpoint that found a 45 percent spike in= BEC attacks in the last quarter of 2016 compared to Q3.
  • A new survey just released by the AFP revealed that 74 percent of s= urvey respondents said their organizations were victims of business email c= ompromise in 2016-a 10 percentage point increase from 2015.
    • Who is responsible for this surge? A number of crooks; but most= notably, the Department of Justice plans to charge a Lithuanian man with $= 100 million of this scam and Interpol has arrested a 40-year old man and ch= arged him with $60 million of this type of fraud. Alas, these two are just = the tip of the iceberg as most experts believe losses exceed $3 billion.
The= frightening thing about this statistic is that this is a completely preven= table crime - if you know what to do. This = is part of the reason we decided to create the Payment Fraud Symposium. Whe= ther you attend our Symposium or educate yourself, fraud prevention and det= ection is one issue you cannot afford to ignore. Every organization will be= targeted.
