Content preview: Home Protection The next rule is to simply make your home
a less attractive target than your neighbors. There's a lot of good information
on The Great Google but a few basics include: Never leave ladders outside
Do not plant strubs up against the house or at least trim them back so no
one can hide behind them Be sure to put a stop on your mail, or get a neighbor
to collect it, should you go on vacation Put a few house lights on timers,
preferably the kind that have some randomness built into to them. Get to

exactly how long it takes for the police to respond and factor that it when
they ignore your alarm sign. So, make the thieves work. Don't leave valuables
laying around. For fscks sake don't leave valuables in your car if you park
outside. I had a neighbor once who bitched that his wallet and laptop were
stolen out of his truck. I hated that neighbor. If your HOA allows it, take
a tip from the US Navy and mount a Phalanx CIWS on the roof of your house.
Yes and no. When I was in retail management I had a shrink problem at one
particular store. Corporate wouldn't install cameras so I went to Radio Shack
and built our own decoy cameras. One in the stock room and two on the floor.
Our shrink problem disappeared almost immediately. Cameras will prevent some
crime, but as you pointed out they're not foolproof. The quality of the ones
you can buy and set up yourself have really improved in recent years, and
the cost has really dropped, so I'd say go ahead and set one (or more) up
