It's an excellent book, well-written, and the recipes work. There have been way too many books from the Middle East, Persia, and Silk Road countries to even process them all this year. And that is reflected in the list of nominees. It will be interesting to see if one of these books stands out against the others, but to me it's just been too many. If I were going to root for a book, it would be Victuals, Koreatown, or Land of Fish and Rice. I won't count out Deep Run Roots - if the recipes are as good as the rest of the production of the book, it could be a stand-out. And we can never discount Diana Henry, who delivers reliable recipes that deliver a lot of punch for minimal effort. Simple could end up being very popular with some judges. In the first Piglet final, back in 2010, Nora Ephron picked "Seven Fires" over "Canal House" because "it sings". I'd like to think this year's winner will also "sing". I have 7 of the 16 contenders. Simple, Koreatown, Taste of Persia, Deep Run Roots, Victuals, Land of Fish and Rice, and My Two Souths. I haven't yet cooked from all of these. I have cooked a recipe each from Samarkand and Soframiz. Of the books I don't have, I would say that Taste & Technique and Samarkand are probably the most likely to end up on my shelves. And maybe Fat Rice. We'll see.

I am really disappointed the All Under Heaven did not make the list. To me, it is quite possibly the most important and interesting book of the year.
