First, learn the vocal and the instrumental part very well separately, so you perform them automatically, almost without thinking. Then, practise them together beginning with short fragments. If the rhythmical patterns in the vocal part and the instrumental part are completely different, especially if there is syncopation involved, analyse it before playing measure by measure, e.g. after this note on the bass, I sing this note, and then, on the second measure, I hit both notes simultaneously...I find that when it comes to singing and playing at the same time, you need to learn the lyrics really, really well. If the lyrics just trip off your tongue, it will be easier to play at the same time. After that it's all just practice, practice, practice. Practice until you physically cannot hold the strings down and your throat is hoarse and then sing the lyrics in your head until you know it back to front. It will come in time. You really need to put in this level of work as the last thing you want is to forget your lyrics on stage or screw up your bass line. Just go off and learn to play something like the white stripes and sing along with it on the bass. (If not white stripes something with a nice simple straight up 16th groove.) Now once you've got this try a few weirder songs, when you get to stuff that has funny vocal schemes over whats being played then just take a bit of time out and deal with that in specific. For me this has built up a "dictionary" of funny rythms I can play along with while singing absolutely anything on top which i tend to use while writing songs (I'll sing song I know over a new riff just to try different vocal lines etc). So basically i'm at the ideal point of being able to play a song in time and not have to worry about precisely fitting the groove of the guitar to the vocals or the other way around, more importantly this tends to cross over to other instruments like pianos too which is quite nice. the advantage of this over the usual "just learn the part till you can play it in your sleep" is a) if you're good enough at bass that's probably pretty easy anyway b) you don't have to relearn the part extensively everytime you get a new song with different chords before you can start jamming it and sorting out the vocals (which is the most important part of the song like it or not) Give me a reply i'd love to talk more about it.
