 As we start thinking about getting our outdoor retreats ready for Spring, we also need to be thinking about securing one of the most valuable spots in our homes, the patio door.
We may not consider patio door security when we picture relaxing evenings out in our yard, or the sun streaming in through the glass into bright kitchens, but, if you really think about it, if you have a patio door a piece of glass is all that separates your home from anyone wishing to enter it. Securing your patio door may take a few extra steps than securing your standard doors.
<br>
 Get a Beware of Dog Sign-
Yes, they may be a little tacky, but a Beware of Dog sign can definitely make a point. The sign will give the impression that your dog is either very large or very vicious or both, and should be approached with caution. Many burglars, fearing either barking or violence, will decide its better not to make a scene while trying to break into a home. Whether you choose to keep your patio door as is, or update to French doors, as the warmer months approach, make sure you are doing all you can to make sure your outdoor oasis remains a safe haven and not a weakness in your home.The biggest problem by far is response times when the system is tripped. In many (if not most) places, response time is high enough that the burglar can trip an alarm and not give a fuck, they'll be gone long before anyone shows up. Audible alarms and cameras give some pause there because they increase the risk of being found after the fact.
Realistically, defense is done in layers, both conceptually and practically speaking. Layer 1 is making your property appear less appealing than other options. Make it obvious that getting in is going to take more time, generate more noise, and leave them in the open where they can be spotted (or be recorded). Layer 2 ties in with layer 1: Make everything difficult. Make it take the most time possible to do anything that nets them valuables. This means that even if they cross the threshold of layer 1, you're mitigating damage by causing them to waste time dealing with your security rather than looting. Step 3 is to ensure the fastest response and highest degree of visibility possible to cut down on the amount of time they have inside your property, and to catch them after the fact.
