Content preview: Keep Memories lright people, lets set the stage. I come from
a very large family. Both sets of grandparents were Mormon, and had lots
of kids. I had tons of cousins growing up. My own family had eleven kids.
You can imagine the family reunions. (They were awesome as a kid, now they're
just awkward.) Anyway, one of my uncles, James, was one of the coolest. This
guy was an architect, had designed his own house, and it was awesome. So
many places to explore. I never saw the whole place, it was just awesome.
Then it comes out that his wife had cancer. My aunt Jenny was as awesome as
uncle James was, loads of fun to hang with, just great. Now, just for reference,
I was around five or six at this time. So anyway, I prayed my little heart
out for her, and lo and behold, she got better. I remember my parents praising
god for giving her a second chance. My little brain thought yeah! I did that
with my prayers! Then of course, as cancer goes, six years later, it came
back with a vengeance. She was doing fine, and then within a month she was
dead. I was devastated. At this point it comes out that my uncle is gay,
and my parents sat us down and told us that we could never see or talk to
uncle James ever again, and that if he ever called we shouldn't talk to him
just hang up. We could never go to his house or be with him, and that if
he ever tried to touch us we should tell mom and dad. I asked if aunt Jenny
had known about this, and they said that they had been having difficult times,
and that uncle James had betrayed her while she had cancer. My siblings and
I of course believed all this bull. I mean we didn't know anything. So for
the next fifteen years I have no contact whatsoever with my uncle or his
family. (Except for when I met one of his daughters while on my mission. Man,
that was an awkward dinner) Then earlier this year I found my way out of
the Mormon corp, and into wonderful life. I started looking up old friends
and family that I hadn't seen or talked to in years for church related reasons.
And I started talking to my uncle [...]
