The service and luxury on offer is spectacular, and especially if you've come all the way from the US you might as well have a comfortable holiday! Also, the private lodges tend to have better access to wildlife areas, so you're likely to have better game sightings... and finally, the better private lodges have Really good guides, and their knowledge will add a whole extra dimension to your trip. Having done a lot of Europe and a lot of Southern Africa myself, I think the quickest (obviously, exceptions apply) summary would be to say that you'll have more variety and cultural interest in Europe, but (much) more luxury and scenery in Africa. In terms of tour operators, most of us specifically negotiate agreements with our favorite lodges, so they offer us a commission on the you'd normally pay them. Some operators then add on a markup afterwards, but if you look at the operator's site for a short trip and do a quick mental tally of the rates quoted on the sites of the lodges mentioned for that trip, you can get a pretty good idea of whether the operator is one that charges standard or adds on a markup. The industry is very competitive, so there are a bunch of really good guys out there - but there are also some bad guys, which makes the trust thing a lot harder for the rest of us. But my point is; you won't necessarily be ripped off by going through an agency, and it might make your life simpler. If you combine my rule of thumb check above with a bit of googling to see if anyone has complained about them, you could find a decent agency.
