Hi Diana,

With all the hype surrounding the field of Medical Coding we take a look to see if it's all it's cracked up to be. Is everything you hear about it true?

==Can you really work from home?==
Yes, however all positions are not but a vast majority are. Working from home is one of the biggest draws of this field.

Find Medical Coding training with an ad listings (http://www.innovativevoicesinc.com/scrobiculated_bum_about-factual.htm)

==Is training really only 3 months?==
Yes and no. Training can be done 3 months but if the person needs more time it can take up to 12 months.

==Can I set my own hours?==
Kind of. Most positions require you to code (x) amount of medical record charts per day. You will most likely be able to get your work done when you want but sill have to meet your coding quotas for the day.

Summary: We see a lot of people getting into medical coding because it's so flexible. It can be a fast career change or you can even do it part-time. Consider medical coding if you are looking for a stable carrer with flexibility.

The below explains ICD-9 to ICD-10 conversion (https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/codes/) and mapping. For help with converting codes, refer to our online ICD-10 code conversion (https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/codes/) tool, see our ICD-9 to ICD-10 crosswalks by specialty (https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/crosswalks/) , or consider our ICD-10 mapping services (https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/icd-10-mapping.aspx) .

One of the identified benefits for the United States' transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 is because of the level of specificity offered by the ICD-10 code format. This specificity will benefit patients and (by giving more detailed diagnosis and treatment information), payers (by more accurately defining services) and international organizations that monitor worldwide disease.

However, all of this specificity comes at a the codes are becoming more complex. In ICD-9-CM, codes are three to five digits. The first digit is either numeric or alpha (the letters E or V only) and all other digits are numeric.

ICD-9-CM code format

In ICD-10-CM, however, codes can be up to seven digits. The first digit is always alpha (it can be any letter except U), the second digit is always numeric, and the remaining five digits can be any combination.

<p>The below  explains<a href="https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/codes/">ICD-9 to ICD-10 conversion</a>and mapping. For help with converting codes, refer to our<a href="https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/codes/">online ICD-10 code conversion</a>tool, see our<a href="https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/crosswalks/">ICD-9 to ICD-10 crosswalks by specialty</a>, or consider our<a href="https://www.aapc.com/icd-10/icd-10-mapping.aspx">ICD-10 mapping services</a>.</p>
<p>One of the identified benefits for the United States' transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 is because of the level of specificity offered by the ICD-10 code format. This specificity will benefit patients and (by giving more detailed diagnosis and treatment information), payers (by more accurately defining services) and international organizations that monitor worldwide disease.</p>
<p>However, all of this specificity comes at a the codes are becoming more complex. In ICD-9-CM, codes are three to five digits. The first digit is either numeric or alpha (the letters E or V only) and all other digits are numeric.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="https://www.aapc.com/images/I9-code-format.jpg" alt="ICD-9-CM code format" align="middle"></p>
<p>In ICD-10-CM, however, codes can be up to seven digits. The first digit is always alpha (it can be any letter except U), the second digit is always numeric, and the remaining five digits can be any combination.</p>
