This week, I am proud to say that the House of Representatives came together in an overwhelmingly bipartisan way to pass a bill I cosponsored, the Protecting Children from Identity Theft Act.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity thieves can steal a child’s Social Security Number and use it to open bank accounts, apply for loans, open credit cards, rent an apartment, or apply for government benefits. This type of identity theft is particularly insidious, not only because it targets children, but because it can be so hard to detect and protect against, as we are not usually monitoring our children’s credit.

The Protecting Children from Identity Theft Act will require the Social Security Administration to update and make available a database that will help protect minors and other vulnerable populations from identity theft by making information more readily available to financial institutions and other organizations that can prevent fraud.  In other words, this bill will help us identify and prevent child identity theft before it happens.
