** Don=E2=80=99t Differentiate=2C Create More Brand Desire! (https://cultb=

------------------------------------------------------------
By Brian Beitler
In today=E2=80=99s cluttered and over-assorted market=2C the conversation=
in organizations often focuses on the importance of brand differentiation=
=2E The need to create or identify a position or particular area of emphasis=
that is different than what competitors currently offer customers. At fac=
e value=2C the idea of differentiation appears healthy and serves to foste=
r crucial internal dialogue that can help shape and improve a company=E2=
=80=99s product or service.

But if you look deeper=2C the focus on differentiation as a driving discus=
sion for a company or brand is flawed. The primary reason is that differen=
tiation starts with a focus on what competitors are doing and not necessar=
ily on what the customer wants=2C needs=2C or will value your brand. The g=
oal is not to be different from a competitor to compete but to be more val=
uable to a customer than your competitor. But =E2=80=9Cdifferentiation ana=
lysis=E2=80=9D often doesn=E2=80=99t lead you in that direction=2C it tend=
s to focus around what you shouldn=E2=80=99t do because someone else is al=
ready doing it=2C versus helping you identify what you should do to win mo=
re customers.

I encourage you to stop overemphasizing what your competitors are doing an=
d to start focusing on what you can do to make your brand more desirable t=
han your competitors in the eyes of your target consumers. And sometimes t=
hat means doing exactly what they are doing=2C only better.

As a guide=2C here are three core areas that you can explore to drive bran=
d desire with today=E2=80=99s consumers.

** Self Esteem
------------------------------------------------------------

At the top of Maslow=E2=80=99s famous hierarchy sit Esteem and Self-Actual=
ization. And never has the need for being =E2=80=9Cactualized=E2=80=9D (ev=
en if in a superficial way) been more transparent. Thank you=2C Selfie-Nat=
ion. Consumers make hundreds of purchase decisions a year based on whether=
or not a product helps them =E2=80=9Cfeel=E2=80=9D more personally confid=
ent and/or more =E2=80=9Cesteemed=E2=80=9D within their social circles. Th=
ere are dozens of other dimensions that play into self-esteem that we don=
=E2=80=99t have time to go through here=2C but a simple google search will=
help you find them.

Brands can increase value and win amongst their competitive set by creatin=
g products/services that enhance the self-esteem of their customers better=
than their competitors. Of course=2C the key is doing the customer field=
work necessary to identify which dimension(s) you need to enhance to elev=
ate your impact.

Brands like Nike focus on making you believe you are your best athlete thr=
ough brand positioning/advertising=2C businesses like LVMH focus on creati=
ng a sense of prestige through exclusivity/quality/pricing with their bran=
ds=2C Apple focuses on making you feel relevant/on-trend through design ae=
sthetics/frequent product enhancements=2C and Starbucks elevates your feel=
ings of sophistication through the product experience.

Do you think any of the above brands are worried about being =E2=80=9Cdiff=
erent=E2=80=9D from their competitors or do you think they are focused on=
building=2C strengthening=2C and maintaining their positions in the eyes=
of their customers?

** Utility
------------------------------------------------------------

Being useful is still one of the most straightforward and most direct ways=
for a brand or business to succeed. To understand the potential of this d=
imension you have to define =E2=80=9Cutility=E2=80=9D in its correct terms=
and understand the dimensions of =E2=80=9Cutility=E2=80=9D as they affect=
the consumers in your particular industry.

In retail=2C utility comes in the form of low prices=2C broad assortments=
=2C convenience=2C ease of shopping=2C friendly staff=2C and the list goes=
on. In the automobile industry (excluding the luxury segment which operat=
es first on self-esteem=2C and secondarily on utility)=2C it can be horsep=
ower=2C towing capacity=2C safety=2C technology integration=2C and other o=
ptions.

One of my favorite recent examples of winning on utility is Uber. Uber rev=
olutionized the taxi and car service industry by creating an incredibly us=
eful new product. Now some have argued that Uber won on the cool factor=2C=
which would be connected to Self Esteem. And don=E2=80=99t get me wrong=
=2C it=E2=80=99s cool=2C and it helped you look even cooler among your soc=
ial circle if you were an early adopter=2C but that is not why it grew so=
fast. It exploded because scheduling a car service for about the same pri=
ce you could pay while standing on the corner waving your hand like a mani=
ac was better in every way. You were not cold in the winter=2C hot in the=
summer=2C wet in the rain=2C the cars were cleaner=2C the drivers were mo=
re helpful=2C and they showed up when you wanted them too. Now that is use=
ful.

My point here is that if the Uber leadership team had started by saying=2C=
how can we be different than the competition. I don=E2=80=99t think they=
would have landed on the current product. Their solution was a customer f=
irst approach (i.e.=2C they were starting with how do you make the custome=
rs experience better in every way=2C not different). Disruption almost alw=
ays rises from being customer centric.

** Connectedness/Community
------------------------------------------------------------

This last dimension of desire has evolved rapidly over the last decade or=
so. I believe=2C in part=2C due to social media and the shared experience=
=2C it creates for all of us. As well as because some visionary leaders fe=
lt that doing good could be an essential part of good business.

In this space=2C brands are focused on finding ideas and belief systems th=
at a group of consumers rallies around. It could be social consciousness=
=2C environmental consciousness=2C or even an activity like running or yog=
a. Several brands have capitalized successfully on this dimension over the=
last decade. Think Toms shoes for social well-being=2C or Lululemon and t=
heir fanatically Yogi base that establish a brand that has become so much=
more=2C or Method cleaning products and the environmentally minded with w=
hom they connected. Although this area is arguably related to self-esteem=
at some level=2C it is a significant enough sub-area that I feel it shoul=
d be broken out. Also=2C I view the focus here as being less self-centered=
than brands built around self-esteem.

Importantly=2C we are seeing significant brands use this area very differe=
ntly than their traditional self-esteem models to build strong brand conne=
ctions. Think the Superbowl ad by Budweiser where they show their factorie=
s being converted to =E2=80=9Ccanned water=E2=80=9D plants. Or=2C Aerie=E2=
=80=99s stand on no-retouching as a way to connect with the Body Positivit=
y minded young women or P&G=E2=80=99s support of the mothers of Olympic at=
hletes.

I share these frameworks because they are the ones I have used as a guide=
over the last 20 years and across six leading brands to help build =E2=80=
=9Cdesired=E2=80=9D and not necessarily =E2=80=9Cdifferentiated=E2=80=9D b=
rands.

Always start with your customer and not your competitors. I know this is e=
asier said than done. We love to talk about our competitors because they a=
re so knowable. Everything they do is documented so clearly in the product=
s they make=2C the marketing they produce=2C and often the financial state=
ments they publish.

Customers=2C on the other hand=2C are often difficult to know=2C their liv=
es are less public=2C and even when they are (thanks again social media)=
=2C it requires significant effort to aggregate it into digestible informa=
tion. And even when you can see how they have behaved at large=2C it is st=
ill hard to understand their internal motivations and drivers. But that is=
where the ideas are that will help you build something truly =E2=80=9Cdes=
irable.=E2=80=9D

Fight the hard fight; it will be worth it in the end.

;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">But if you look deeper=2C the focus=
on differentiation as a driving discussion for a company or brand is flaw=
ed. The primary reason is that differentiation starts with a focus on what=
competitors are doing and not necessarily on what the customer wants=2C n=
eeds=2C or will value your brand. The goal is not to be different from a c=
ompetitor to compete but to be more valuable to a customer than your compe=
titor. But =E2=80=9Cdifferentiation analysis=E2=80=9D often doesn=E2=80=99=
t lead you in that direction=2C it tends to focus around what you shouldn&=
#8217;t do because someone else is already doing it=2C versus helping you=
identify what you should do to win more customers.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">I encourage you to stop overemphasiz=
ing what your competitors are doing and to start focusing on what you can=
do to make your brand more desirable than your competitors in the eyes of=
your target consumers. And sometimes that means doing exactly what they a=
re doing=2C only better.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=

;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">As a guide=2C here are three core ar=
eas that you can explore to drive brand desire with today=E2=80=99s consum=
ers.

<h2 style=3D"margin: 0;padding: 0;display: block;font-family: Helvetica;fo=
nt-size: 26px;font-style: normal;font-weight: bold;line-height: 125%;lette=
r-spacing: -.75px;text-align: left;color: #000000 !important;">Self Esteem=

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">At the top of Maslow=E2=80=99s famou=
s hierarchy sit Esteem and Self-Actualization. And never has the need for=
being =E2=80=9Cactualized=E2=80=9D (even if in a superficial way) been mo=
re transparent. Thank you=2C Selfie-Nation. Consumers make hundreds of pur=
chase decisions a year based on whether or not a product helps them =E2=80=
=9Cfeel=E2=80=9D more personally confident and/or more =E2=80=9Cesteemed=
=E2=80=9D within their social circles. There are dozens of other dimension=
s that play into self-esteem that we don=E2=80=99t have time to go through=
here=2C but a simple google search will help you find them.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Brands can increase value and win am=
ongst their competitive set by creating products/services that enhance the=
self-esteem of their customers better than their competitors. Of course=
=2C the key is doing the customer field work necessary to identify which d=
imension(s) you need to enhance to elevate your impact.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Brands like Nike focus on making you=
believe you are your best athlete through brand positioning/advertising=
=2C businesses like LVMH focus on creating a sense of prestige through exc=
lusivity/quality/pricing with their brands=2C Apple focuses on making you=
feel relevant/on-trend through design aesthetics/frequent product enhance=
ments=2C and Starbucks elevates your feelings of sophistication through th=
e product experience.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Do you think any of the above brands=
are worried about being =E2=80=9Cdifferent=E2=80=9D from their competitor=
s or do you think they are focused on building=2C strengthening=2C and mai=
ntaining their positions in the eyes of their customers?

<h2 style=3D"margin: 0;padding: 0;display: block;font-family: Helvetica;fo=
nt-size: 26px;font-style: normal;font-weight: bold;line-height: 125%;lette=
r-spacing: -.75px;text-align: left;color: #000000 !important;">Utility</h2=

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Being useful is still one of the mos=
t straightforward and most direct ways for a brand or business to succeed.=
To understand the potential of this dimension you have to define =E2=80=
=9Cutility=E2=80=9D in its correct terms and understand the dimensions of=
=E2=80=9Cutility=E2=80=9D as they affect the consumers in your particular=
industry.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">In retail=2C utility comes in the fo=
rm of low prices=2C broad assortments=2C convenience=2C ease of shopping=
=2C friendly staff=2C and the list goes on. In the automobile industry (ex=
cluding the luxury segment which operates first on self-esteem=2C and seco=
ndarily on utility)=2C it can be horsepower=2C towing capacity=2C safety=
=2C technology integration=2C and other options.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">One of my favorite recent examples o=
f winning on utility is Uber. Uber revolutionized the taxi and car service=
industry by creating an incredibly useful new product. Now some have argu=
ed that Uber won on the cool factor=2C which would be connected to Self Es=
teem. And don=E2=80=99t get me wrong=2C it=E2=80=99s cool=2C and it helped=
you look even cooler among your social circle if you were an early adopte=
r=2C but that is not why it grew so fast. It exploded because scheduling a=
car service for about the same price you could pay while standing on the=
corner waving your hand like a maniac was better in every way. You were n=
ot cold in the winter=2C hot in the summer=2C wet in the rain=2C the cars=
were cleaner=2C the drivers were more helpful=2C and they showed up when=
you wanted them too. Now that is useful.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">My point here is that if the Uber le=
adership team had started by saying=2C how can we be different than the co=
mpetition. I don=E2=80=99t think they would have landed on the current pro=
duct. Their solution was a customer first approach (i.e.=2C they were star=
ting with how do you make the customers experience better in every way=2C=
not different). Disruption almost always rises from being customer centri=
c.

<h2 style=3D"margin: 0;padding: 0;display: block;font-family: Helvetica;fo=

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">This last dimension of desire has ev=
olved rapidly over the last decade or so. I believe=2C in part=2C due to s=
ocial media and the shared experience=2C it creates for all of us. As well=
as because some visionary leaders felt that doing good could be an essent=
ial part of good business.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">In this space=2C brands are focused=
on finding ideas and belief systems that a group of consumers rallies aro=
und. It could be social consciousness=2C environmental consciousness=2C or=
even an activity like running or yoga. Several brands have capitalized su=
ccessfully on this dimension over the last decade. Think Toms shoes for so=
cial well-being=2C or Lululemon and their fanatically Yogi base that estab=
lish a brand that has become so much more=2C or Method cleaning products a=
nd the environmentally minded with whom they connected. Although this area=
is arguably related to self-esteem at some level=2C it is a significant e=
nough sub-area that I feel it should be broken out. Also=2C I view the foc=
us here as being less self-centered than brands built around self-esteem.<=
/p>
<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Importantly=2C we are seeing signifi=
cant brands use this area very differently than their traditional self-est=
eem models to build strong brand connections. Think the Superbowl ad by Bu=
dweiser where they show their factories being converted to =E2=80=9Ccanned=
water=E2=80=9D plants. Or=2C Aerie=E2=80=99s stand on no-retouching as a=
way to connect with the Body Positivity minded young women or P&G=E2=
=80=99s support of the mothers of Olympic athletes.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">I share these frameworks because the=
y are the ones I have used as a guide over the last 20 years and across si=
x leading brands to help build =E2=80=9Cdesired=E2=80=9D and not necessari=
ly =E2=80=9Cdifferentiated=E2=80=9D brands.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Always start with your customer and=
not your competitors. I know this is easier said than done. We love to ta=
lk about our competitors because they are so knowable. Everything they do=
is documented so clearly in the products they make=2C the marketing they=
produce=2C and often the financial statements they publish.

<p style=3D"margin: 1em 0;padding: 0;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-te=
xt-size-adjust: 100%;color: #000000;font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 15px=
;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Customers=2C on the other hand=2C ar=
e often difficult to know=2C their lives are less public=2C and even when=
they are (thanks again social media)=2C it requires significant effort to=
aggregate it into digestible information. And even when you can see how t=
hey have behaved at large=2C it is still hard to understand their internal=
motivations and drivers. But that is where the ideas are that will help y=
ou build something truly =E2=80=9Cdesirable.=E2=80=9D
