You ma= y have visited the place on vacation, but until you actually live there, yo= u really don't know how your life will be. It's quite likely that your life will be better than you had in your home c= ountry. Why? It will probably cost you less. The causes of stress back home= will likely disappear. The local people you meet will most likely be kinde= r and gentler than you are accustomed to. The weather almost certainly will= be better. Expats living in Nicaragua find this beautiful country very economical, wit= h a sense of freedom they never knew in the U.S. or Canada. With internatio= nal friends and a healthier lifestyle, people can also afford to hire help = to make their lives easier. They spend their days getting together with fri= ends, going to the beach, working on hobbies, riding their horses, or takin= g classes=E2=80=94really what a retirement is supposed to look like. But don't just take my word for it. The expats I meet here in Nicaragua all= say similar things. "Back home I was not able to 'walk into town,'" says Jean Cherep. "I meet p= eople much easier here. Every time we have dinner, we always meet someone n= ew and then we run into them when we are in town doing something else. We g= o to the beautiful beaches in Nicaragua frequently and they are free. In So= uthern California we had to pay to park near the sand or walk for miles and= cart a ton of stuff...I didn't go very often." Another expat, Sharla K. Martinez, can afford house help five days a week, = since it only costs her $300 a month. "It totally spoils me," she says. Melissa Hedding is in a similar situation. "I have a cleaning lady and a po= ol I couldn't have otherwise, a lot more chances to walk around in my daily= life, and the ability to live without owning a car," she says. "Time goes slower here," says Julie Hoffman. "I have help here that I could= not afford at home. I pay really inexpensive property taxes and car insura= nce. There is a sense of freedom here that we don't feel in the U.S. And I = can ride my horses right into town." In my case, I could never have afforded to retire in the U.S. at all. But h= ere in Nicaragua, as I write this article, I'm looking at my view of the oc= ean from my living room. Last night I had an imported strip steak at our fi= nest restaurant in town with one group of friends, then went with others to= the once-a-year beach party the city sponsors. Later today I'll be going w= ith yet another friend to one of our 22 beaches for the best tacos around. = And tonight, a Nicaraguan friend and I will go dancing at the nightclub in = the city. I've never lived so well as I do here in Nicaragua. And I'm never going bac= k. This is my home now. The grass is greener on the other side. Moving Overseas: The Grass Really Is Greener on the Other Side
