They were managing a small B&B with three bedrooms in the main house and tw= o casitas. At five miles and a 15- to 20-minute drive over bad roads, it's = somewhat isolated and away from the tourists, intended as an artists' retre= at. While the owner was away on a two-and-a-half-month break, they kept an = eye on maintenance needs, supervised staff, and oversaw two tenants, one of= whom left two weeks into their stay because his work in Mexico was done. "It's a pretty large house with a lot of maintenance to take over. He wante= d somebody reliable so the jungle wouldn't take over the house while he was= gone," says Bill, laughing. There was weekly garden and maid service=E2=80=94the house took five hours = to clean. That's when the Langfords had to be on site, otherwise they could= come and go as they pleased. "We did have to make sure to water the gardens all the time. The owner had = orchids that had to be watered a couple of times a day. We took out the gar= bage and took care of the dogs," says Bill. "We took care of it like it was our house. So when the owner came home it w= ould be in good condition and animals healthy." This was the couple's second caretaking/house-sitting assignment. When they first moved to Puerto Vallarta in 2015, to flee the rainy weather= of their native Seattle, they were scanning Craigslist for a rental for th= emselves=E2=80=94for many years the couple had been vacationing for a month= at a time in town. Then they saw a listing for a house-sitting position. It seemed too good to be true. A luxury villa, 15 suites (sleeping 45) on f= ive levels, with expansive views of Puerto Vallarta and the Bay of Banderas= . It was the site for weddings, family reunions, and the like. Puerto Vallarta's Bay of Banderas is ringed with golden-sand beaches. And even the caretaker's residence was impressive. "We had a two-bedroom, three-bathroom expansive villa of our own," says Suz= ie. "The bedrooms had air conditioning and were enclosed; the rest of it, t= he living room and kitchen was open air. It was breathtaking with a view of= the bay." After emails back and forth with the owner and an in-person visit, they dec= ided to take it on. "The owner was looking for us to live there and have somebody there all the= time. The general manager and the staff go home at night.
