=E2=80=9CObjects aren=E2=80=99t very important any more. I want t= o get to the origin of matter=2C to the thought behind it=2C=E2=80=9D said= German artist Joseph Beuys in the 1960s. Pursuing this rogue philosophy= =2C Beuys placed himself at the nexus between viewer and artwork=2C throug= h his wildly popular teachings at the Kunstakademie D=C3=BCsseldorf and in= installations that shunned traditional media for process-oriented materia= ls such as beeswax=2C animal fat=2C and felt. And then there were his publ= ic =E2=80=9Chappenings=E2=80=9D such as How to Explain Paintings to a= Dead Hare=2C for which the artist plastered himself in honey and gol= d leaf=2C a dead hare in his lap=2C or I Like America and America Like= s Me=2C which entailed locking himself in a room with a coyote. In Beuys=2C director Andres Veiel mines a rich trove of rare archival= footage=2C bringing back an artist=2C who=2C thirty years after his death= =2C continues to exert an outsized influence on artists today.

In the 1960s Elsa Dorfm= an was a Cambridge=2C Massachusetts schoolteacher when a colleague present= ed her with a Hasselblad camera=2C setting her on a lifelong artistic path= =2E She began by photographing family and famous friends=2C including Allen= Ginsberg and Robert Lowell. But in 1980 Dorfman got her hands on a Polaro= id Land camera (one of only seven made)=2C and=2C over the next 30 years= =2C she used the massive device to create large-scale instant photographs= =E2=80=94portraits 20 inches wide by 24 inches tall=E2=80=94in saturated c= olors and with unparalleled detail. Documentarian and longtime friend Erro= l Morris (The Fog of War) finds Dorfman reminiscing as she sorts= through her archive including the =E2=80=9CB-side=E2=80=9D photographs=2C= or alternate shots from a sitting. Now 80 and still active=2C she grapple= s with a fading analog past in the digital present.
