Please join us for an evening of short films exploring the marriage of ar= ts=2C education=2C and activism in communities of color=2C specifically Ch= icago. =E2=80=9963 Boycott=2C about the fight to desegregate Chic= ago public schools=2C will screen with The Chicago Mixtape=2C a f= ilm that advocates for the support of arts education as a means of youth e= mpowerment.

In 1963=2C the conditions of public schools servicing black nei= ghborhoods in Chicago were disastrous: overcrowded=2C poorly staffed=2C an= d shoddily maintained. Rather than let black students enroll in white scho= ols=2C School Superintendent Benjamin Willis placed run-down trailers in p= laygrounds and parking lots surrounding school buildings. Parents=2C educa= tors=2C and students reacted in outrage and=2C on October 22nd= =2C over 250=2C000 people marched through the city to demand Willis=E2=80= =99 resignation. Directed by Gordon Quinn (Home for Life=2C A Good Man= )=2C =E2=80=9963 Boycott connects the forgotten story of one= of the largest northern civil rights demonstrations to contemporary issue= s around race=2C education=2C school closings=2C and youth activism.

The news out of= Chicago tends to highlight an increasing homicide rate=2C failing schools= system=2C and police corruption. Violence has become the norm for many re= sidents=2C leaving a bleak future. In the documentary Chicago Mixtape<= /em>=2C filmmaker Paola Piers-Torres attempts to flip the narrative. Throu= gh the story of 13 year old Jalen=2C we enter into the world of spoken wor= d=2C performance=2C and activism. Jalen and his peers use poetry as a vehi= cle for change=2C and learn to pick up the tools of creation rather than d= estruction. Piers-Torres crafts a compelling argument for the necessity of= arts education as a means of empowering a new generation of activists and= community leaders.
