We love it here," says Donna James of her= and husband Ron's six-month stays in Panama. "We go for a lot of walks and= love morning coffee on the side patio, and evening drinks watching the sun= set. Our area is full of birds, so the birdwatching is wonderful." For the long, lazy summer months in the north, Donna and Ron live in their = cabin on a lake in central Alberta. When it starts getting cold, the couple= hop on a plane. They spend the winter months enjoying the simple life and = low cost of living in their new home near La Concepci=C3=B3n, in western Pa= nama. "We would probably stay longer, but we miss our children and our parents," = says Donna. "Ron and I first visited Panama in 2009. Being from Calgary, Alberta, we we= re getting tired of the cold winters and short summers. "The labor to build our home was inexpensive. The cost of building material= s was about the same as it is in Canada. Also, our new home entitles us to = not have to pay any property taxes for 20 years. That was a big plus for us. Once we had th= e jubilado card (retiree discount card) we could get discounts in restauran= ts, hotels, and theaters, and on buses and flights. "We are out in the country near the town of La Concepci=C3=B3n, and it is o= nly a five-minute drive to get groceries, go to the big hardware store, and= buy veggies at the local market. Most of the vegetables in Panama are grow= n up in the mountains near us, so the produce is very fresh. There is Borin= quito swimming pool, in the town of La Concepci=C3=B3n, for those who love = to swim. There are the local restaurants and a few new upscale ones to dine= at. There is a new strip mall with a gelato store, a bakery, and our favor= ite, Sibaris restaurant. "Our cost of living is very reasonable. We can get most of the things we ar= e used to at PriceSmart in David. Beer is especially cheap here, with price= s around 50 to 70 cents a bottle. Our power bill is subsidized, and we get = a jubilado discount. We spend around $60 per month. Our internet is $58 and= our stove and barbecue use gas, which is cheap at $6 for a 35-pound bottle= . Water is very inexpensive (about $60 for the coming year). Our truck runs= on diesel, and those prices are around 60 cents a liter. I am always surpr= ised when I get back to Canada and see the prices there. "For healthcare, we pay as we go. I have been to some doctors and had blood= work done. The fees were reasonable=E2=80=A6we go to the dentist for clean= ings and also to the optometrist. Ron got glasses here; it's much cheaper t= han in Canada. "There is a perfect place for everyone in Panama. Just looking out at my ga= rden brings a smile to my face. I dreamed of retiring and having a garden, = but never in a tropical area. Life can't get any better! I feel this is our= home, as our cabin on the lake in Canada is small and our home here is muc= h more spacious," Donna says. "We plan to come every year to Panama and spend winter here.
