Direct from its US premi= ere at MoMA Doc Fortnight=2C this award-winning documentary by Turkish fil= mmakers Ekin =C3=87al=C4=B1=C5=9F=C4=B1r and Ayse Toprak=2C who joined us= as Greenhouse 2017 Artists-in-Residence=2C follows two gay Syrian refugee= s who are struggling for self-expression and basic human rights while tryi= ng to rebuild their lives. Husein is a barber in Istanbul living a double= life between his conservative family and his gay identity and yearning to= escape to Europe. Mahmoud is a journalist and the founder of Syria=E2=80= =99s gay rights movement=2C living as a refugee in Berlin where he helps a= sylum seekers. They come together to realize a dream: to participate in th= e International Mr. Gay World Pageant as a forum to direct attention to th= e Syrian LGBTQ refugees=E2=80=99 plight across the Muslim world.

Althou= gh the market offers a crucial service for their survival=2C local authori= ties decide to tear down the bazaar and build a shopping mall instead. But= Roghieh won=E2=80=99t give up without a fight. Iranian filmmaker Mina Kes= havarz=E2=80=99s insightful=2C beautifully artful documentary uses the sto= ry of the bazaar to offer a unique look at the daily lives of women strugg= ling to earn a living in the Iranian countryside without legal protection= or support.

Filmmaker R= ana Abu Fraiha shares a unique and powerful story about her family=2C who= abruptly fled their home in the Bedouin village of Tal-a-Sabeh and moved= to the nearby affluent Jewish town of Omer. After a difficult 10 years of= dealing with breast cancer=2C their mother=E2=80=99s only wish was to be= buried in Omer=2C which refused to address the issue of where to bury the= ir Muslim residents. This intimate film follows an entire family torn betw= een fulfilling their mother=E2=80=99s last wish and the social codes that= cannot be ignored=2C and raises serious questions about nationality and w= omen=E2=80=99s identity.

Iranian filmmaker Maryam Ebrahimi (JBFC Greenhouse 2016 Arti= st-in-Residence) has created a powerful portrait of Saeid Sadeghi=2C a war= photographer during the Iran=E2=80=93Iraq War (1980-1988) whose heroic ph= otos became an important tool of government propaganda. A firm supporter o= f the Iranian Revolution at the time=2C today he contemplates his shared r= esponsibility for the deaths of countless young soldiers who were influenc= ed by his photography to become martyrs themselves. Interspersed with arch= ive footage=2C this stunning documentary is also an essay on ideology=2C p= ropaganda and the power of the image.
