Jazz Night in America

Canadian saxophonist and flutist Jan= e Bunnett took her first trip to Cuba in 1982 and subsequently dedicated h= er life to the country's music=2C traveling to the island more than 100 ti= mes. Bunnett says that being able to travel and establish a rapport with o= ther cultures is the best part about being a musician. "It's more than mus= ic=2C it's friendship."

In 2013 Bunnett noticed a longstandi= ng disparity: She'd mostly collaborated with men=2C especially instrumenta= lists. In response=2C she helped establish Maqueque=2C an all-= female band of young Cuban artists blending folkloric Cuban music and jazz= =2E

In this episode of Jazz Nig= ht in America=2C we'll hear Maqueque's exhilarating performance from= Jazz at Lincoln Center=2C spend some time with Bunnett=2C learn of a devo= tion to an ever-growing Cuban musical family and hear from some of the wom= en of Maqueque on their decisions to leave Cuba to pursue a music career.<= /p>

Joshua Redman has embraced a vibrant career for more than 25 year. Since b= eing launched into the public eye in 1991 after winning the Thelonious Mon= k International Jazz Competition=2C Redman has paved his career with acrob= atic hard-bop=2C groove-oriented funk and sensitive ballads. For the first= time the saxophonist confronting the music of his father=2C saxophonist D= ewey Redman.
