A Message from the Desk of Rabbi Steven Burg
Dear Aish Family=2C

There are many festive holidays that are celebrated by Jews around the wor=
ld throughout the year. None strikes more of a cord for Aish than Chanukah=
=2E Chanukah in the Old City of Jerusalem is packed with Jews coming to see=
 the spot of the miracle that happened so many years ago.

It was directly across from the Aish HaTorah Dan Family World Center on th=
e Temple Mount where the Kohanim (Hereditary Rabbis who served in the Temp=
le) found only enough oil for one day which lasted for eight. For some rea=
son=2C many Jews who may not be particularly observant or connected to the=
ir Judaism always have a warm place in their heart for Chanukah.

I had the opportunity this week to have a conversation with a fellow Jew w=
ho I met on one of my travels. I was in line in a store when the person be=
hind me tapped me on the shoulder and wished me a very loud Happy Chanukah=
=2E I turned around to respond and to see who it was. I was surprised when t=
he person in front of me seemed to be a biker dressed in full leather rega=
lia. I=E2=80=99m pretty sure there was even a skull on the back of his ves=
t.

He gave me a big smile and repeated=2C "Happy Chanukah brother." He said t=
hat whenever he sees someone in a Kippa (skullcap) he lets them know that=
 he=E2=80=99s a =E2=80=9Cmember of the tribe=E2=80=9D he then pulled out a=
 chain from under his shirt with a =E2=80=9CChai=E2=80=9D (symbol meaning=
 life) on it. We spoke for a few minutes and he told me that although he i=
s not a practicing Jew he is proud of his heritage.

I asked him what it was about Chanukah that he enjoyed. He told me that it=
 symbolized for him all of Jewish history. A bigger and stronger nation tr=
ied to beat us up. As always they didn=E2=80=99t realize how tough the lit=
tle Jews are. In the end=2C we won. (He used more colorful language).

I gave him my card and told him that if he wanted to learn more about his=
 heritage I had just the place for him=2C across from the spot of the Chan=
ukah miracle. This chance meeting gave me keen insight into our brothers a=
nd sisters that are so far from the Almighty.

Even though many Jews don=E2=80=99t practice religious rituals=2C they sti=
ll feel=2C deep in their hearts=2C an intense pride for being Jewish. Our=
 job at Aish is to give those Jews an opportunity to turn that pride into=
 action. To give our brothers and sisters the ability to study the wisdom=
 of the Torah and come closer to the Almighty. To help light=2C not only t=
he candles of the Menorah=2C but the flame in their hearts.

Aish Around The World

Aish UK's =E2=80=9CGlaishal=E2=80=9D Chanukah Party lights up the town

Over 300 young professionals filled the Montcalm Hotel on Monday evening f=
or Aish UK=E2=80=99s Annual Chanukah Party in partnership with Western Mar=
ble Arch Synagogue.

This year=E2=80=99s party billed as the =E2=80=9Ccoolest Chanukah party in=
 town=E2=80=9D was ice-themed and featured a variety of polar party-pieces=
 including frozen snow cones=2C an ice juggler=2C and a live ice carving o=
f a giant menorah which was lit at the end of the evening by
Sophie and David Eden.

One partygoer=2C Talia Briski commented=2C =E2=80=9CThanks so much to Aish=
 for a great evening. The atmosphere was amazing and everyone enjoyed the=
 impressive ice sculptured menorah and yummy doughnuts. Once again Aish pu=
t on a fab
event bringing together hundreds of young professionals from all over Lond=
on."

Aish Detroit Women's Rosh Chodesh Event

This Monday night Aish Detroit had its first Rosh Chodesh evening - painti=
ng with a Jewish twist.

The Aish Detroit women meet monthly on Rosh Chodesh (to tap into the femin=
ine energy of the day) to create a piece of art=2C learn Torah and enjoy g=
ood food and wine.

Aish Detroit chose to use art as a way to connect with Judaism because whe=
n you are being creative you are expressing a part of you that is very G-d=
ly. Hashem is the ultimate creator and using that energy of creativity ope=
ns your soul in a different way than just listening to a lecture.

The women all made wooden signs with different Jewish messages and designs=
=2C they walked away with a broader knowledge of Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah=
 and went home feeling energized and empowered.
Hasbara Fellowships impact at Wayne State University

Students for Israel at Wayne State University has grown exponentially this=
 semester!

With a major increase in membership=2C they embarked on a mission of educa=
ting students about Israel through Detroit's first-ever Israel Week. It wa=
s an enormous success! The week kicked off with Israel Palooza=2C that was=
 complete with an Israeli food truck=2C photo booth=2C a mural created by=
 Artists for Israel=2C a DJ=2C and even blue and white ice cream! The grou=
p planned a Coexist Sesh Besh (backgammon) game for the entire student bod=
y=2C a huge Shabbat dinner with IDF soldiers=2C and tabled with Hasbara Fe=
llowship's "Faces of Israel" campaign. Their pursuit of dialogue has led t=
o incredible conversations with their peers and community members. Student=
s for Israel at Wayne is making a positive impact on their campus and we a=
re looking forward to many more successes.

Visitors of the Aish HaTorah Dan Family World Center

The Aish4AEPi group is back at the Aish World Center for two weeks of insp=
iring educational sessions=2C incredible excursions around the country=2C=
 amazing activities=2C and tons of fun brotherhood building initiatives!

AEPi brothers walk away from the trip knowledgeable about Judaism=2C inspi=
red by Israel=2C and equipped to bring their experience home to make a big=
 difference on campus.

Thanks to Rabbi Chananel Weiner=2C director of Aish4AEPi New England=2C an=
d the entire Aish Essentials team lead by Rabbi Stu Schwartz for collabora=
ting on this biannual endeavor.

The Zaldin Family=2C members of the Aish Thornhill Community Shul in Toron=
to=2C pose during their very special visit to the Aish World Center with o=
ne of their favorites=2C Rav Gav Friedman. This is a first-time visit to I=
srael for the children. The parents have both been on JWRP missions.

Mr. Abe Dichter=2C today 95 and living in Montreal=2C is the only survivor=
 of his family from the Holocaust. He came to Israel to celebrate the Bris=
 Mila of his great-great-grandson!

He is pictured here on the Aish World Center Observation Deck with his dau=
ghter and grandson Rabbi Yosef Sprung=2C who himself became a first-time g=

 celebrated by Jews around the world throughout the year. None strikes mor=
e of a cord for Aish than Chanukah. Chanukah in the Old City of Jerusalem=
 is packed with Jews coming to see the spot of the miracle that happened s=
o many years ago.&nbsp;<br>
<br>
It was directly across from the Aish HaTorah Dan Family World Center on th=
e Temple Mount where the Kohanim (Hereditary Rabbis who served in the Temp=
le) found only enough oil for one day which lasted for eight. For some rea=
son=2C many Jews who may not be particularly observant or connected to the=
ir Judaism always have a warm place in their heart for Chanukah.&nbsp;<br>

 have a conversation with a fellow Jew who I met on one of my travels. I w=
as in line in a store when the person behind me tapped me on the shoulder=
 and wished me a very loud Happy Chanukah. I turned around to respond and=
 to see who it was. I was surprised when the person in front of me seemed=
 to be a biker dressed in full leather regalia. I=E2=80=99m pretty sure th=
ere was even a skull on the back of his vest.&nbsp;<br>
<br>
He gave me a big smile and repeated=2C "Happy Chanukah brother." He said t=
hat whenever he sees someone in a Kippa (skullcap) he lets them know that=
 he=E2=80=99s a =E2=80=9Cmember of the tribe=E2=80=9D he then pulled out a=
 chain from under his shirt with a =E2=80=9CChai=E2=80=9D (symbol meaning=
 life) on it. We spoke for a few minutes and he told me that although he i=
s not a practicing Jew he is proud of his heritage.&nbsp;<br>

ah that he enjoyed. He told me that it symbolized for him all of Jewish hi=
story. A bigger and stronger nation tried to beat us up. As always they di=
dn=E2=80=99t realize how tough the little Jews are. In the end=2C we won.=
 (He used more colorful language).&nbsp;<br>
<br>
I gave him my card and told him that if he wanted to learn more about his=
 heritage I had just the place for him=2C across from the spot of the Chan=
ukah miracle. This chance meeting gave me keen insight into our brothers a=
nd sisters that are so far from the Almighty.&nbsp;<br>

 an opportunity to turn that pride into action. To give our brothers and s=
isters the ability to study the wisdom of the Torah and come closer to the=
 Almighty. To help light=2C not only the candles of the Menorah=2C but the=
 flame in their hearts.&nbsp;<br>

 town=E2=80=9D was ice-themed and featured a variety of polar party-pieces=
 including frozen snow cones=2C an ice juggler=2C and a live ice carving o=
f a giant menorah which was lit at the end of the evening by<br>
Sophie and David Eden.<br>

One partygoer=2C Talia Briski commented=2C =E2=80=9CThanks so much to Aish=
 for a great evening. The atmosphere was amazing and everyone enjoyed the=
 impressive ice sculptured menorah and yummy doughnuts. Once again Aish pu=

Aish Detroit chose to use art as a way to connect with Judaism because whe=
n you are being creative you are expressing a part of you that is very G-d=
ly. Hashem is the ultimate creator and using that energy of creativity ope=
ns your soul in a different way than just listening to a lecture.&nbsp;<br=

s an enormous success! The week kicked off with Israel Palooza=2C that was=
 complete with an Israeli food truck=2C photo booth=2C a mural created by=
 Artists for Israel=2C a DJ=2C and even blue and white ice cream! The grou=
p planned a Coexist Sesh Besh (backgammon) game for the entire student bod=
y=2C a huge Shabbat dinner with IDF soldiers=2C and tabled with Hasbara Fe=
llowship's "Faces of Israel" campaign. Their pursuit of dialogue has led t=
o incredible conversations with their peers and community members. Student=
s for Israel at Wayne is making a positive impact on their campus and we a=
