I generally steer clear of politics because at Aish HaTora= h we are focused on the growth of one=E2=80=99s soul regardless of politic= al affiliation. This week I feel the need to make an acceptation to that r= ule and share with you my feelings on the recognition of Jerusalem as the= capital of Israel by the United States. Aish HaTorah physically sits in a very strategic and important spot in Jer= usalem. For two thousand years=2C Jews would make their way to pray at the= Kotel (Westen Wall) which was the last remnant of the Beis HaMikdash (Jew= ish Temple). Suddenly in 1948 at the end of the War for Independence=2C th= e Jews were expelled from the Old City of Jerusalem and could not visit th= e Kotel. For that period of time=2C any Jew found in the Old City of Jerusalem woul= d be killed. It took nineteen years for the Jews to return to the Kotel wh= en Israel won the Six Day War. At that point=2C the Old City of Jerusalem= became =E2=80=9Coccupied territory=E2=80=9D by Israel. A place where Jews= had lived for over 2000 years=2C with only a gap of nineteen years due to= the fact that we were physically thrown out under the penalty of death=2C= had suddenly historically become not ours. To say that this policy was ludicrous is an understatement. Jerusalem has= been the eternal capital and the heart of the Jewish people for 3000 year= s going back to Abraham. To accuse us of being occupiers was clearly a for= m of revisionist history. Soon after the six-day war Rav Noach Weinberg ZT=E2=80=9DL came to the Old= City of Jerusalem with a dream. He established Aish HaTorah as a place to= study Jewish wisdom for Jews with little to no Judaic background. We chos= e this spot due to the fact that it was the destination of Jews from all a= round the world who came searching for a spot close to the Almighty. In the forty years that we have opened our doors=2C we have built an insti= tution where Jews of all walks of life can come and find inspiration. One= can gaze from our rooftop on the Aish HaTorah Dan Family World Center and= see the spot where Abraham=2C Isaac=2C and Jacob came to pray three thous= and years ago. Truly inspirational. To have the President of the United States finally state with certainty an= d finality that the policy of the US would be to officially recognize that= Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish nation was moving to say the least= =2E It meant that the fiction which has been circulated for fifty years=2C t= hat Jews were occupiers of Jerusalem=2C was finally publicly being called= for the terrible lie that it was. The US should be congratulated for havi= ng the courage to state the truth. This does not mean that we do not desire peace with our neighbors. At Aish= =2C we employ quite a few Arabs and I have gotten to know them very well o= ver the years. They are good people. As Jews=2C we desire nothing more tha= n to live in peace and harmony with our neighbors. Unfortunately=2C peace= will only come when terror ceases to be a tool used to hurt and scare Jew= s. At Aish=2C we know this all too well as we lost one of our dear Rabbis= two years ago to a terrorist's knife. To say that recognizing the fact that Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewi= sh people will be the root cause of violence is false. Terror comes when b= ullies try to impose extremist views on the rest of the world. I pray ever= y day for peace to come to Israel. I pray every day for a cessation of ter= ror threats against Jews around the world. I now give thanks to the Almigh= ty for the courage of the United States of America in articulating the tru= th that Jerusalem always has been and always will be the eternal capital o= f the Jewish people. A Message from the Desk of Rabbi Steven Burg

Dear Aish= Family=2C

Week in and week out I spend time writing= about some aspect of Aish or the Jewish people. I generally steer clear o= f politics because at Aish HaTorah we are focused on the growth of one=E2= =80=99s soul regardless of political affiliation. This week I feel the nee= d to make an acceptation to that rule and share with you my feelings on th= e recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the United States.&= nbsp;

Aish HaTorah physically sits in a v= ery strategic and important spot in Jerusalem. For two thousand years=2C J= ews would make their way to pray at the Kotel (Westen Wall) which was the= last remnant of the Beis HaMikdash (Jewish Temple). Suddenly in 1948 at t= he end of the War for Independence=2C the Jews were expelled from the Old= City of Jerusalem and could not visit the Kotel. 

For that period of time=2C any Jew found i= n the Old City of Jerusalem would be killed. It took nineteen years for th= e Jews to return to the Kotel when Israel won the Six Day War. At that poi= nt=2C the Old City of Jerusalem became =E2=80=9Coccupied territory=E2=80= =9D by Israel. A place where Jews had lived for over 2000 years=2C with on= ly a gap of nineteen years due to the fact that we were physically thrown= out under the penalty of death=2C had suddenly historically become not ou= rs. 

To say that this policy was ludicrous is an understatement. Jerusalem has= been the eternal capital and the heart of the Jewish people for 3000 year= s going back to Abraham. To accuse us of being occupiers was clearly a for= m of revisionist history. 

Soon after the six-day war Rav Noach Weinbe= rg ZT=E2=80=9DL came to the Old City of Jerusalem with a dream. He establi= shed Aish HaTorah as a place to study Jewish wisdom for Jews with little t= o no Judaic background. We chose this spot due to the fact that it was the= destination of Jews from all around the world who came searching for a sp= ot close to the Almighty. 

In the forty years that we have opened our= doors=2C we have built an institution where Jews of all walks of life can= come and find inspiration. One can gaze from our rooftop on the Aish HaTo= rah Dan Family World Center and see the spot where Abraham=2C Isaac=2C and= Jacob came to pray three thousand years ago. Truly inspirational. 
To have the President of the United States= finally state with certainty and finality that the policy of the US would= be to officially recognize that Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish na= tion was moving to say the least. It meant that the fiction which has been= circulated for fifty years=2C that Jews were occupiers of Jerusalem=2C wa= s finally publicly being called for the terrible lie that it was. The US s= hould be congratulated for having the courage to state the truth. 
This does not mean that we do not desire peace with our neighbors. At Aish= =2C we employ quite a few Arabs and I have gotten to know them very well o= ver the years. They are good people. As Jews=2C we desire nothing more tha= n to live in peace and harmony with our neighbors. Unfortunately=2C peace= will only come when terror ceases to be a tool used to hurt and scare Jew= s. At Aish=2C we know this all too w= ell as we lost one of our dear Rabbis two years ago to a terrorist's knife= =2E 

To say that recognizing the fact that Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewi= sh people will be the root cause of violence is false. Terror comes when b= ullies try to impose extremist views on the rest of the world. I pray ever= y day for peace to come to Israel. I pray every day for a cessation of ter= ror threats against Jews around the world. I now give thanks to the Almigh= ty for the courage of the United States of America in articulating the tru= th that Jerusalem always has been and always will be the eternal capital o= f the Jewish people.

This past Shabbat the Aish Thornhill Community Shul had a sponsored Sh= abbaton with Rabbi Mordechai Becher. 

Besides being a real mensch=2C Rabbi Becher was brilliant=2C funny and wil= ling to speak as much as Rabbi Avram Rothman could organize him. He spoke six= times over Shabbat=2C once Motzoi Shabbat and twice Sunday morning.<= br>
The Aish Thornhill Community Shul took a =E2=80=9CParty Bus=E2=80=9D=2C wh= ich we called a Melave Malka Bus with 50 adults to the Toronto Aquarium. R= abbi Becher led a two hour Torah Tour of the aquarium that was brilliant.= From Kashrut to the Leviathan and from Midrash to Talmud=2C his audience= was spell bound. The event was a fundraiser for our JWRP programs and it= was a great program. Rabbi Becher was outstanding and everyone spoke abou= t how well the program ran from the onboard dinner and craft beer to= the great Torah - it was an outstanding evening. We had people of all bac= kgrounds on the tour=2C and everyone enjoyed themselves=2C learned a lot a= nd had a very special evening.

Hasbara Fellowships' fall season of Tech Fairs had a g= reat start. They had their first Tech Fair of the season at T= ufts University. It was a great success that showcased Israeli co= mpanies from the Boston area. A pitch competition was held=2C where four s= tudent start-ups pitched for a chance to participate in a 30-day Incubator= Program in Israel sponsored by the Madgera Startup Hatchery. 

The Fair was co-sponsored by Tamid at Tufts=2C Tufts Venture Lab=2C Tufts= Entrepreneurial Society=2C Tufts MAKE=2C the Gordon Institute=2C and the= Career Center. Hasbara Fellow Spencer Zeff and= Isaac Herman played a key role in planning the event.

Start-Up Nation Tech Fairs were also held at Rutgers Universi= ty and George Washington University. I= n addition to our expo floor of Israeli companies=2C students were able to= participate in CEO Coffee Conversations with Eyal Bino from ICONYC Labs and Jordan Weis= s from Spitball. These half-hour sessions allowed for a more informal dialogue between s= tudents and CEOs. Students at George Washington University loved speaking= to Jacob Bacon of GradTrain.
